Divorced

The end of a marriage is often a very difficult and emotional time for everyone involved. Adjustment is affected by feelings about the marriage, how and why it ended, and the current relationship with the ex-spouse. Lifestyles are affected by increased independence, new financial arrangements, and new responsibilities for the home. Even outside of the home, relationships with extended family, friends, and acquaintances are affected.

While circumstances can be quite different for each person experiencing a divorce, one thing is the same. Support can make a world of difference in how individuals cope. Connecting with others who can provide practical information or encouragement can help individuals and families make a healthy adjustment. Click here to learn about programs in Guilford County.

When parents divorce, children are also affected. Children view their parents' separation from the eyes of a child and can be deeply impacted. Their adjustment is affected by many factors, most strongly by the way their parents support and communicate with them. There is much parents can do to help their children; there is also a lot that even well-meaning parents do that can have a long-lasting and negative impact on their children.
