Galatians
6:6 – Great Commandment Retreats
(A Free Get-Away for Pastors and Spouses.
One reason that strengthening marriage has not been a
priority in many churches is that the marriages of many pastors
are shaky. Every pastor has a very demanding "mistress" - the
church - who is constantly calling him away from his home.
"Pastor, please come to our house; my husband is very sick."
"Pastor, my marriage is in crisis. Can we meet with you?" Result:
clergy wives feel neglected. One study reports that 70% of pastors
wives are unhappy.
Recognizing this need, David Ferguson and his wife, Teresa, who
lead Intimate Life Ministries in Austin, took out a loan on their
home to pay for the first Galatians 6:6 retreat. Though he has two
earned doctorates from Oxford, David tells attending clergy of the
shaky beginning of their own marriage at age 16. He was in and out
of prison five times by age 21. Their presentation is moving and
so transparent, attendees are motivated to talk through issues in
their own marriage. In the attached brochure, are typical
comments: "You may never know the appreciation and love we have
found within us because of this ministry. You have given us hope
and helped us deal with hurts and experience true forgiveness,"
said a Texas pastor. An Ohio wife adds, "I had begun to wonder if
God cared. I now know how important I am to Him."
Galatians 6:6 Retreats are held on Monday and Tuesday, so that the
pastor need never miss a Sunday in his pulpit. This is a $350-$400
gift to every attending couple who only pays for travel expenses.
